The Sony VAIO Duo 11 is one of the most elegant and captivating design among the numerous Windows 8 convertibles to have unveiled at IFA this summer. This note cum tablet can be flipped, twisted and closed to form a slate kind device that can accept touch inputs. A 1080p touch screen coated in Gorilla Glass, a sturdy magnesium-alloy design and generous selections of ports are some of the unique features of this product. Priced at$1,200 and up this ultrabook comes with a stylus that can help to make touch screen selection and some light photo editing easy.

Sony VAIO Duo 11 Review : An Ultrabook that lacks the edge

The Duo 11 is a Core i5-3317U CPU clocked at 1.7GHz, 6GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD and integrated with Intel HD 4000 graphics. You can see that there are similar configuration systems available in the market that produces nearly the same benchmark scores.

When compared to PC Mark7 and 3DMark 11, Duo 11  stays ahead among the group but trails behind Acer Aspire S7, a non-convertible Ultrabook with a 2.4GHz Core i7 CPU. Sony’s sliders show a good read and write speeds, logging a max of 540 MB/s and 525 MB/s, respectively. Looking at the price range of$1,200-and-up there is Dell XPS 12 with a 1080p screen that flips inside the hinge accompanied with a very comfy keyboard.

Duo 11 weighs 2.87 pounds and 0.71 inch thick. This system is fairly light with the Toshiba’s 12-inch Satellite U925t slider, which tips in at 3.35 pounds. It’s also very marginally heavier than the 2.8-pound Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11 but still for a tablet 2.87 pounds is a lot to handle.

Sony VAIO Duo 11 Features

sony-vaio-duo-11-laptop-price-dubai The magnesium-alloy body build Duo 11 has considerable amount space allotted for HDMI-out, a full-size SD slot and a VGA port. On the left side, there’s a VGA connection, SD card slot and headphone jack. The power button, HDMI out and two USB 3.0 ports line the right edge. Up front above the display is a 2.4-megapixel camera, and a rear-facing shooter with the same resolution sits on the flip side. In laptop mode the display takes up a good third of the keyboard deck.

As such the layout suffers from this arrangement and keys are found to be small even though they are decently spaced. There’s no trackpad on board but you have the left- and right-click buttons along with a tiny optical pointing stick situated between the G and H keys. The touch buttons are quite responsive but as they are small its difficult to make sure your fingers are in exactly the right place. This accompanies N-Trig digitizer stylus, which comes in handy for selecting items on-screen.

The 11.6-inch Duo 11 has 1,920 x 1,080 (190 ppi) resolution which is coated with thick Gorilla Glass. This system is IPS technology enabled and thereby viewing angles are wide. The fixed angle display could be one drawback of the slider but luckily, the IPS panel does a good job of battling glare. Sony also provides softwares like ArtRage Studio Pro, which is drawing application that features several different pen and brush tools that lets you create images with layers. In addition to this the program also includes handwriting recognition that can translate scribble phrases into typed words. The audio of two small bottom-mounted speakers is not very powerful and better experience can be obtained through a sonic fidelity or headphones

Sony VAIO Duo 11 Drawbacks

Even though the SonyVaio Duo 11 looks very stylish the design is a little uncomfortable. The base extends beyond the display; as such it feels jagged and uneven. While typing one could see that the thumb settled on the extended lower half, and this put extra weight on our fingers gripping the device from behind.

Again while sliding the system from laptop mode to tablet seems to be wobbly and does not seem sturdy enough to withstand manhandling. When we tested the battery life 4,960mAh battery lasted out after a modest 4 hours and 47 minutes which is slightly less as compared to other touchscreen ultrabooks.

Sony VAIO Duo 11 Price in Dubai

Leaving aside the cramped keyboard and low battery life we could say that there’s plenty of appeal to Duo 11.The design is not thin enough as far as a tablet is concerned. But with the brilliant Gorilla Glass display, good performance and with an inclusion of an accurate digitizer pen makes this product worth the price.
